Overview For Engaged or Civilly Married Couples

For Mentor Couples For Pastors, Assistant Pastors and Deacons

Both engaged couples and couples who are already civilly married can benefit from Marriage Mentorship. We have different workbooks and videos for the two groups.

How much time does mentorship take?

It is recommended that you meet once a month with your mentors. There are six topics for engaged couples and four for civilly married couples. Each session lasts about 1.5 hours of conversations suggested in each chapter of the workbook.

Who would make a suitable mentor couple?

A suitable couple will be one you already know who has been married in the Church for at least five years, has a marriage you admire, and is attending Sunday Mass regularly. They can also be in a mixed-faith marriage– one Catholic and one non-Catholic. Parents and siblings should not be your mentors.

How do we find a mentor couple?

Consider extended family members (cousins, aunts/uncles), parents’ friends, couples from your parish, friends, friends’ siblings, neighbours, co-workers, former high school mates, school teachers, coaches, etc.

What if we can’t find a mentor couple?

Speak with the Coaching Couple from your parish and they will help you with ideas to identify one.

When should we start mentorship?

Mentorship could begin at any time after you meet with the priest and Coaching Couple. Mentorship and marriage formation could run concurrently if pressed for time. However, we suggest you begin the mentorship after the diocesan formation course. You would complete the mentorship sessions before your wedding day.
