St. Joseph and the Year of the Family: Relying on and Working with our Spiritual Father

On March 19th, in the Year of St. Joseph and on the Solemnity of St. Joseph, we begin a special new chapter of our pilgrim journey. On March 19th we begin what Pope Francis has proclaimed, “The Year of the Family”. And what a blessed guide, example, and intercessor we have in blessed St. Joseph – patron of families, of fathers, of our nation of Canada, and of the Universal Church. The Church is the “family of families”, and not only is St. Joseph her guardian, but he is the guardian of your family, your greatest treasure.

Following the humble example of one of our most profound countrymen and St. Joseph-devotees, St. André Bessette, and reappraising the golden virtues that Our Lord’s foster father radiates as the Pillar of Families, we will soak in the richness of St. Joseph through story, art, and our own lived experience. Ultimately, from this talk, the indispensable figure of St. Joseph will appear, even more, as a close member of our own family.

Fr. Mark McGuckin was born and raised in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. Prior to entering the Seminary of Christ the King in 2010, he was working as writer, actor, editor, and producer in the Vancouver Film and TV industry. Father Mark was ordained as a diocesan priest for the Archdiocese of Vancouver on May 14th, 2016, alongside his good friend Fr. Lucio Choi. Fr. Mark spent two years as an assistant pastor at St. Paul's in Richmond, another two years at St. Mary's in Chilliwack, and now he is currently pastor at St. Joseph's in Port Moody. Fr. Mark describes his ministerial vocation to serve the people of God in the Archdiocese (and beyond) as an absolute joy and privilege.
