About this Event
One-week course at the St. Mark's College Summer Institute - Open to all learners, new and returning
Broaden your understanding and love of music and how it relates to our Catholic tradition. Listen to and sing diverse examples of Catholic music from across time and around the world. Learn about the theological and cultural contexts of these musical treasures. No musical experience is necessary.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Understand a basic historical framework into which particular pieces of Catholic music can be situated
- Employ techniques for listening to and talking about particular pieces of Catholic music that are encountered in worship and daily life
- Analyze how music is used in Catholic liturgy through observation and participation
- Connect developments in Catholic music with its with broader cultural, artistic, and ecclesial contexts
- Be more aware of how others appreciate Catholic music differently than themselves
- Value the diversity of Catholic music across time and around the world
- Learn more about particular pieces of Catholic music on their own
