About this Event
Bioethics originally began as a focus on the environment and the living world around us. The focus of bioethics in the 1960s and 1970s shifted to clinical dilemmas in the wake of the development of new technologies and concerns over how persons were treated as patients. The current crisis of climate change has led clinical bioethics to become more aware of its roots and consider how the health of persons and the care they receive when ill is linked to our changing and deteriorating environment. Catholic bioethics, in particular, is challenged by Pope Francis’ writings in Laudato Si’ and Laudato Deum.
Fr. Myles Sheehan, S.J. will be offering the annual Jesuit Lecture for the Centre for Christian Engagement at St. Mark’s College. Fr. Sheehan is uniquely trained to address this topic as a physician, professor of medicine, ethicist, and Jesuit priest. Currently he directs the Pellegrino Center for Biomedical Ethics at Georgetown University. At Georgetown, Fr. Sheehan teaches Catholic Clinical Ethics and serves on the ethics consultation service at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
This event is free to the public, but kindly register beforehand or email [email protected] for questions. Light refreshments will be served following the question and answer session.
